In the past week you have created hope where once there was resignation. In action and in spirit you have been a reflection of much that is good in the Hong Kong people. The world has watched in admiration. I have never felt more proud of the people I feel privileged to call my own.
In the face of cold authority robbed by diktat of its humanity you have shone as a beacon of warmth. You have faced up to the ugliness in our community – the bigots and racists and those who fly the flags of ignorant intolerance.
Confronted by the selfish you have been selfless. You have countered lies not in words but in action. Every witness now stands by your side.
In your youth you have shown us the future. It is a future defined by selflessness. A future people work together and not against each other. It is a future that gives me hope in our home city. It is a future I welcome.
Do not be blind to what you have achieved. Behind closed doors all know this city will never again be the same. Your voice has been heard and the world knows your story. You have made your point.
But it is time now for this chapter to end. Greatness lies as much in knowing when to step back as in the action. In pursuit of perfection an artist who does not step back from the canvas risks spoiling all that is created. End now on your terms and in your power, and with the dignity with which you have marked your protest.
Trust now in the institutions you are fighting to uphold. Trust in the police and our judiciary to serve the community. Trust them to carry on your fight against the thugs on the streets and in boardrooms. Call them to task and lend them your support.
Do what the authorities could not when they held the cards. Show your good faith.
You have been heroes. But together we can be better.
